By using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Dex is grounded in the actual documentation content:

  1. Your question is converted to a 768-dimensional embedding vector
  2. Hybrid search finds relevant documentation chunks
  3. Retrieved context is passed to Google Gemini 2.5 Flash
  4. Dex generates a response with source citations

This eliminates hallucinations - Dex only knows what's in your documentation.

Dex uses a sophisticated hybrid search algorithm combining vector similarity and keyword matching:

finalScore = (0.7 * normalizedVectorScore) + (0.3 * normalizedKeywordScore);
  • Query is embedded using Google's text-embedding-004 model (768 dimensions)
  • Cosine similarity finds semantically similar content chunks
  • Works well for conceptual and natural language queries
  • Classic probabilistic ranking function
  • Parameters: k1=1.5, b=0.75, avgDocLength=5000
  • Works well for specific terms, API names, and code references

Just-in-Time Scraping

If Dex needs content from a page that hasn't been scraped yet, it automatically fetches and indexes that page during the conversation.
